About the program

The Grow Green Youth Entrepreneur Program enables students to learn valuable business skills at a young age, while at the same time it improves their math, reading and science skills.

The garden and the vegetables the students grow are the vehicles for teaching and reinforcing these skills. The skills these students acquire will give them an advantage as they enter adulthood.

The students have a variety of vegetables in their garden. These vegetables include cherry tomatoes, eggplant, watermelon, jalapeno peppers, carrots, corn, collard greens, radishes, and more.

Youth sell the vegetables at a local farmer’s market right alongside other entrepreneurs. At the market, students get first-hand learning experiences on how to present products and interact with customers to get them to buy the products.

Communication skills are also learned and are essential to the success of the students and the program.

Living Better...
The Grow Green program not only promotes business concepts, it also promotes healthy living and raises environmental awareness. The goals of the program are as follows:
  • Apply gardening methods that conserve the use of water, lower pesticide use, and are available to anyone regardless of health handicaps or experience
  • Increase physical activity of youth
  • Increase self-esteem
  • Increase awareness of healthy eating habits and healthy lifestyles
  • Provide a positive alternative for youth to realize their potential as citizens
  • Help participants learn personal accountability for their circumstances and decisions
Earth Box
The Grow Green program uses the Earth Box system. The Earth Box is one of the most simple, yet productive, planting products in the market. Its features include:
  • Self watering: Uses 60% less water due to built in reservoir for holding the water for the garden.
  • Efficient: 28% less fertilizer
  • Size: Can hold up to two cubic feet of soil
  • Mobility: The Earth box can be moved to increase or decrease the time spent in the sun.
  • Staking system: Optional staking system maintains stability, making the container resistant to tipping over.
  • Weed control: The box has a soil cover that maintains moisture while keeping weeds down.
